Top 10 Movies

Over the next few weeks I'll post my lists of top 10 movies of all time, top 100 movies of all time, and some sub-categories thereof; like top 10 comedies of all time. My list of top 10 movies of all time is rather unconventional I suppose. It is comprised of films that I find myself watching over and over, and not necessarily ones with just the best directing, best cinematography, most controversy, etc. I'm not a huge fan of science fiction or kids films so while something like Star Wars might be considered a top film by a majority of the planet, it's simply not really on my radar. I also struggle to get into older films so you aren't going to find something like Citizen Kane listed here. By no means do I think any of the aforementioned films are bad films, they simply aren't my favorite. I have no problem admitting that these films might not be masterful works of art, but they're still my current top 10 movies of all time.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King [Blu-ray]

2. Schindler's List (Widescreen Edition)

3. The Shawshank Redemption

4. Wedding Crashers

5. The Fighter

6. To Kill a Mockingbird

7. Memento

8. American History X

9. The Shining

10. The Town

I realize many of the movies listed are relatively new and that this doesn't capture the entire scope of film-making, but as I mentioned before a lot of the older films just don't draw me in the same way as the newer films.

So why the above films for my Top 10 Movies of All Time?

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Simply a masterpiece. Everything from the writing, the acting, to the absolutely breathtaking scenery and stunning cinematography. A perfect ending to one of the best trilogies of all time.

Schindler's List

Normally I'm not huge into time-pieces, but this one really drew me in. An unforgettable film about the brutality and horrors that the Jewish population of Europe suffered during World War II. A recipient of many awards. The excellent acting and the amazing story told by Schindler's List earned it a place in my Top 10 Movies of All Time.

The Shawshank Redemptiom

An incredible film about the importance of integrity and perseverance when one faces a difficult situation. This movie has become a household favorite over the years. A must watch if you haven't seen it.

Wedding Crashers

Quite possibly one of the best comedies of all time. Wedding Crashers can be crude and perverse at one moment and heartfelt the next. A great story about two friends and their struggle with love and friendship. Unforgettable one liners and laughs.

The Fighter

A predictable film but a great one none-the-less. The Fighter tells a great story about the different struggles that two brothers faced while growing up. Mark Wahlberg plays a home-town hero boxer. Christian Bale plays a washed up boxer who is addicted to cocaine. Bale's stunning performance won him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor of 2010. Mellisa Leo, another co-star in the film won Best Supporting Actress of 2010.

To Kill a Mockingbird

One of the few older films that I absolutely loved. A classic novel turned into an absolutely brilliant film. Courage, compassion, and racial injustice are all major themes in this movie. Gregory Peck does a phenomenal job acting in it.

Memento

An excellent and original film directed by Christopher Nolan. Memento uses a non-linear narrative structure to tell a story. It can be confusing on first watch but usually after a second run through everything comes together much more clearly. The use of black-and-white sequences really draw attention and put emphasis on critical events.

American History X

This was one of the more violent films that I watched and at a very young age none the less. It made a strong and lasting impression on me which is why it is part of my Top 10 Movies of All Time. American History X tells an incredible story about racism and the influences of the neo-nazi movement. The film relies on powerful motifs including murder, rape, prison, and literature to tell its story. One of Edward Norton's best performances.

The Shining

Classic. Psychological Horror. One of Stanley Kubrick's many great films. The Shining truly feels cold. Jack Nicholson does an excellent job acting; probably better than you'll ever find in any other horror film. Also one of the few films that is often considered to be better than it's original written counterpart. Worth watching, even if you don't like horror films.

The Town

Ben Affleck has starred in some terrible films, but so far his track record for directing is excellent. The Town, one of his two films, feels precise in all of its actions. The acting, the writing, the cinematography. It all moves quickly. The Town almost feels like a modern remake of the 1995 film Heat with a comparable if not better shootout scene.
