Wedding Rings

Your wedding rings are a lasting reminder of your marriage and can remind you daily of your partner. They're as important a decision as choosing your wedding dress, so take your time and do some research before you buy them.

Traditionally, your wedding ring will match your engagement ring in colour and approximate style (and could be followed some years later by an eternity ring!) but it's totally up to you what you choose. Some people wear their wedding band on a chain around their neck, or wear their engagement and wedding rings separately, so they do not necessarily have to match. Your ring does not even have to be similar to your partner's, if your tastes are very different. What is important is the symbolism they provide, so have fun choosing!

The symbolism of a wedding ring stems from the infinite nature of an unbroken circle, signifying that you will stay a couple forever. Since Roman times, wearing your wedding ring on the fourth finger is important because they believed the vena amoris, a vein in the left ring finger, connected directly to the heart. A slightly less romantic history traces back to times when weddings were primarily to connect families rather than for love, and the exchange of valuables was a symbol of security to ensure the couple would be economically sound.

Wedding Rings

Some of the classic options available in terms of the material the ring is made from include various qualities of gold, silver, platinum and titanium, or even two different tones. You may want a precious stone, diamond or other decoration included in your wedding ring, or perhaps an engraving of your initials, names, date of your wedding or a special inscription made on the inside of the band.

Look online or visit some jewellers with your partner to see what is available within your budget and then find out your ring sizes by either being measured at a store or using a simple measuring tool at home (you can get these free or very cheaply online from jewellery stores). Measure first in the afternoon (since your fingers will be at their largest then due to the blood flow of your activity throughout the day) then again in the morning (when you are cool) to ensure that the size is still OK. Make sure you buy your rings at least a few months in advance of the wedding date to give you time to resize or exchange them if you're not entirely happy.

At your ceremony, your rings will be presented to you by somebody special, such as your best man or a page boy, and you might want to use a ring pillow or a special box for this purpose. Whatever you do, choose somebody trustworthy and reliable to look after your precious wedding rings on the day!

Think about insuring your wedding rings too, especially before you go away on your honeymoon. A staggering 1 in 4 newlyweds apparently lose their wedding ring within 5 years of getting married, and many manage to do so within the first few weeks while they're swimming or relaxing on their honeymoon!

Whereas most of your accessories on your wedding day will be chosen according to whether they compliment your wedding dress, your wedding ring is the one item that will definitely be worn separately after the event, so for once you can put all other wedding styles and colour-themes aside and choose something for its longevity!

A Bride's Guide to Tipping Wedding Vendors

When planning your wedding, you may wonder how much of your budget to put aside for gratuities and tips. You may not be sure who gets tipped or how much is customary to tip. Be sure to read all contracts that you sign with your vendors to make sure that you are aware if tipping is optional (at your discretion) or contractual. Some vendor contracts will automatically add a certain percentage to your bill to cover the customary standard gratuity.

Here is a breakdown of who you should tip and how much you should tip. Note these are only standard guidelines, you may choose to add more for exceptional service. You should prepare envelopes with the proper amounts already in them, addressed to the proper vendors.

Rehearsal Dinner - 20 percent of the total bill, many restaurants will add this onto the bill on larger parties.

A Bride's Guide to Tipping Wedding Vendors

Hairstylist / Make Up Artist / Nail Technician - It is customary to tip 15 to 20 percent of the total cost and should be paid once services are completed.

Musicians for the Ceremony - Standard tipping is to dollars per musician and is expected at the end of the ceremony. The father of the bride or the best man presents the envelope to the musicians.

Officiant for the Ceremony - Customary of 0 and up, or make a donation to the church or synagogue in which you are getting married. This contribution can be in addition to or in lieu of a tip. If tipping, have the father of the bride or the best man hand the envelope to the officiant right after the rehearsal or the ceremony.

Delivery Truck Drivers / Reception Set Up - This could include the cake delivery and set up, the floral set up, decoration set up, tent set up, etc... if the set up staff who is setting up is not a part of the reception staff. It is customary to tip to dollars per person depending on the difficulty of the set up. The person accepting the delivery should hand out the tips. If you will not be there during delivery or set up, you should tip either before or after, to the appropriate vendor.

Reception Staff - normally is eighteen to twenty percent of the final reception bill. This amount of tipping may seem like a lot to pay, but remember this is divided among all the staff who worked your event. It is usually paid when the balance of your reception bill is paid and is normally included in your contract. You may choose to give added gratuity for exceptional service on the day of your event after the reception.

Reception Musicians or DJs - Customary to tip 5 to 20 percent of the total cost. The father of the bride or the best man presents the envelope to the musicians at the end of the ceremony. You would tip a band 5 percent per musician (20 percent total for 5 musicians) and a DJ up to 20 percent of the total cost.

Reception Hall Maitre d' - or more for each of these staff members, depending on the amount of guests and total reception bill. The father of the bride or the best man presents the envelope to the Maitre d'.

Reception Bartenders - In addition to the amount specified in the contract, 10% of the total bar bill should be tipped to the bartenders. Have the cash in envelopes in advance and have maitre d' pass along the tip.

Powder Room / Coat Check / Parking Attendants - Should receive .50 cents to per guest attending. Have the cash in envelopes in advance and have maitre d' pass along the tip.

Transportation - It is customary to tip 20% of the total cost. Many limousine companies can offer you to pay in advance or to tip on the day the service is completed. Have the best man in charge of turning over the cash tip you prepared in advance.

Finally, the following vendors do not typically receive gratuities but you may certainly add them to the list if their service is outstanding: photographer, videographer, caterer, baker, jeweler, wedding consultant, seamstress, and florist.

Your Wedding Ceremony - Statements of Intent in Your Perfect Wedding Ceremony (Step 4)

There is a formula to writing a wedding ceremony, which if you follow it, can lead you to a perfectly wonderful ceremony that looks exactly like you and your relationship AND will help you create promises that you can live into your entire life together. If you slowly assemble your ceremony, working your way through the pieces, you can create exactly what you need and want. You can do this on your own or with the person who is celebrating your marriage.

Step Number Four: Statements of Intent. Before I started performing wedding ceremonies, I went off to the Seminary Library and did a lot of research. In almost every religious tradition, there was a section entitled Intentions. How wonderful, I thought, how DO you intend for this marriage to change your life, your relationship and your world? Well, of course, the religious institutions weren't interested in that. They wanted to know whether you would sign up for their understanding of marriage.

Many of my clients are not traditionally religious, but even if they are, and intend to have a traditional wedding ceremony, I believe that there needs to be a place in the wedding where the couple says, out loud, in their own words:

Your Wedding Ceremony - Statements of Intent in Your Perfect Wedding Ceremony (Step 4)

That they love their partner Why they fell in love with their partner What will keep them falling in love, over and over again, with their partner That they intend to be in love with their partner for the rest of their lives.

Weddings are full of priestly exhortations and threats about loving one another forever. Why not take this opportunity and be entirely yourself. Say I love you in your own way. Here are some general guidelines. Too much specificity allows you to copy rather than create.

Tell stories and draw conclusions about how you met Say what you knew then that you will live on forever Talk about what draws you to your partner Talk about why you believe that long-term marriage is important Talk about why you are committed to both long-term marriage and to this relationship

Sound like yourself. Share what you have to say before hand. Don't memorize. Have statements of similar length and keep both well under three short paragraphs. This may be the most important piece of the ceremony, and it's the only one where you speak in your words, but you'll be nervous, so pay attention to these suggestions.
